People are kind.
“Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” -― Desmond Tutu
There is so much hatred, negativities, pain and sufferings in
the world that it's difficult to stay positive and hopeful. Every day we read
about killings, violence, rape, sickness, death, disaster and about events that
are so distressing. Yet, we ought to wake up every morning, go to work, perform
our best and anticipate a good result.
When we initiated Food for Education as a
fundraising campaign on Facebook, we were uncertain as to whether we would
be able to provide for six children even for one academic session. However, we
were overwhelmed with the response we got from our friends, family members and
never-met before friends on our Facebook. It was just the beginning of a beautiful,
unpredicted journey.
I have come to understand that we need to
have faith in the goodness within us and in the world around us and remain
consistent. People are kind.
Since the beginning of FFE, I have come
across people from different walks of life who are kind, empathetic and thoughtful.
People who are aware of what our society lacks to progress, aware of the
reality of people from economically marginalized groups. People who are less
fortunate than so many of us, in so many ways.
Isn’t it amusing how we take so many things
for granted? Most of us never have time and realization to appreciate people
and the comfortable life we live against all odds. We are aware of unjustified economic
disparity in our society. Nonetheless, it takes conscious and deliberate
efforts from everyone to narrow down the existing gap in our society. FFE was a
conscious choice we made, uncertain of its future. It was our own, small way of
changing the lives of six young boys and girls. Our success isn’t determined by
the cash we collect. Our success is determined by the children’s overall growth
and how they feel everyday about attending school and having a good one time
meal.
Alongside the journey of raising funds and
arranging meals, we’ve been bestowed with an opportunity to come closer to
experience kindness of so many people. Kindness of more than 100 people who have
donated cash, of people who so generously give us advice and suggestions on how
we could provide more to the children, of people who are never hesitant to
speak to us and meet us and introduce us to their friends and colleagues. People
are kind. They are kind in thoughts and in deeds.
We need to have faith in the goodness
within us and in the world around us. Let’s take a little time out to
appreciate and encourage ourselves to do better and to do more, to value the
beautiful life we have and be a little more kind every day.
