A year of being married and all that jazz

We marked a year of being married yesterday with a lot of good food and some nice conversation. And here I am today with my laptop, writing this blog reflecting on a year of being married. Being married is a beautiful thing. To have somebody you love, share the ups and downs of your life is very special. This past year has seen some highs and some lows. We have fought our own battle like every couple does but I am not writing this blog to talk about that. I am writing this blog to acknowledge and appreciate all the women in my life because being married has helped me see women from a completely new perspective. This is to acknowledge the efforts of women who wake up much before dawn and before she works for herself, she cleans the house, prepares meal for her family and still manages to reach work on time. Also, to those women who reach home much after dusk, tired and weary, but with a lot of energy to prepare dinner and tend to her families’ needs. I know a lot of women ...

Why I love what I do?

Not because of all the lovely messages I receive on Teacher’s Day every year or for the chocolates children bring to share on their birthdays. I love being a teacher because my every day starts with so much energy and I don’t have a minute to spare during the day to think of what I am doing with my life. So here’s why I love what I do :) a. I am the savior Children have these weird problems that they need an instant solution of. Only last week, a first grader came to me and said that two of her friends wanted her to be their best friend and she was unable to decide whose best friend she wants to be. On an average, at least 5 among 250 children misplace their belongings in a day and they need to find it immediately. Once a boy lost one of the shoes he was wearing.  How is that humanly possible? To lose a shoe you are wearing on your foot? How! One of the recurring issues of children is ‘cutting the line’ and ‘overtaking’. I don’t know how uncommon this problem is but at l...

The Simplest Joys of Life

“Enjoy the little things in life because one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” – Kurt Vonnegut As I sit here, sipping tea, watching whatever comes on television, listening to Hindi songs in the background, I realize how happiness and comfort come from the simplest of things in life. This moment is life. There is nothing I am waiting on or trying to achieve. I am simply living in this moment knowing the fact that tomorrow remains uncertain. So here I make an attempt to list down six top simplest joys of life I have experienced today J 1. Waking up early on a Saturday I woke up a bit too early for a Saturday morning being fooled by my husband into thinking that breakfast was ready and it just couldn’t wait. I had planned to remain in bed until at least the noon but waking up being fooled early morning wasn’t so bad either. Sooner you wake up, longer the day seems. Longer the weekend feels, happier the heart is.   2. Making fluffy, t...

Win-all

Schools must do more to bring students out of their classrooms and into the community Soon after I appeared for SLC in the year 2003, I got an opportunity to volunteer at St. Xavier's Social Service Center. While volunteering at the center, I got a chance to see the reality that was so different from what was real for me within the confines of the classroom and my circle of close friends and family members. The hardships and challenges faced by the differently-able children at the center awakened my senses and as I look back on it, they made me more empathetic and compassionate.  I only wish I had an opportunity to experience it while I was in school. As a secondary level teacher now, I advocate for students to have a firsthand experience in community service so that they are aware of the social reality and they know how their small efforts can positively change the larger community. Student participation in community services has multifaceted benefits. While the s...

Teachers’ role

I clearly remember how it used to be like when I was in school. Teachers primarily used to deliver lessons, take daily attendance and check copies. The only time that the parents got a chance to interact with the teachers was during the report card distribution. There used to be a different person checking the nails, ensuring that the hair was done properly, that the length of the skirt was appropriate. Information was bound in books and children were confined in classrooms. The role of teachers in a child’s education has changed a lot and education is no more confined to books, classrooms and schools. Children today are exposed to electronic and print sources of knowledge and are exposed to massive information every minute. Teaching today is one of the most challenging and demanding professions everywhere in the world. It is disheartening but this profession is not for someone lured by long holidays anymore. Teachers’ roles have been redefined and to survive in this cons...

Celebrating Womanhood

Image
“It’s the fire in my eyes,   And the flash of my teeth,   The swing in my waist,   And the joy in my feet.   I’m a woman   Phenomenally.”   ―   Maya Angelou ,   Phenomenal Woman: Four Poems Celebrating Women I consider myself very fortunate to have had this opportunity to work with so many women, so closely. The more I understand fellow women, the more I respect every woman. This blog is an attempt to pay tribute to the beautiful, powerful women I know.   I respect women for the roles they play as mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, friends, role models, teachers, creators of life and many other roles they play.  And I really feel that every woman should be able to feel special and celebrate womanhood just because they are. Soon after my marriage, I was bestowed with the responsibilities of a wife, a daughter-in-law and a responsibility of striking a balance between two families and work. There is frustration and fati...
