Celebrating Womanhood

“It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.”

Maya Angelou, Phenomenal Woman: Four Poems Celebrating Women

I consider myself very fortunate to have had this opportunity to work with so many women, so closely. The more I understand fellow women, the more I respect every woman. This blog is an attempt to pay tribute to the beautiful, powerful women I know.
I respect women for the roles they play as mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, friends, role models, teachers, creators of life and many other roles they play.  And I really feel that every woman should be able to feel special and celebrate womanhood just because they are.

Soon after my marriage, I was bestowed with the responsibilities of a wife, a daughter-in-law and a responsibility of striking a balance between two families and work. There is frustration and fatigue but at the same time, beautiful, joyous moments that come out of the bonds of marriage. I may not be doing it right but I am trying every day. As I take upon these responsibilities, I look around and see so many women who are doing it just fine.

A woman who has a job and a career always tries to bring balance between work and home bound responsibilities. There is a continuous fear of judgment and negligence while maintaining that balance I suppose. If a woman chooses to prioritize her family and children over her work, there is a fear of her passion and profession being buried. And on the other hand, if a woman chooses to prioritize her work, there is a fear of criticism, lack of support from family or broken family. This is a tribute to all the working women, trying hard every day to not being sacked from work for prioritizing her family responsibilities and also to those who do their job well and take the challenge to take both the roles.

I also take immense pleasure and pride in mentioning the pivotal roles women play as mothers. As a teacher, I have come across many mothers and it is wonderful seeing women nurturing and caring for their children. Because it is important how mothers, along with the fathers, work to bring up a child. It determines what this world is turning into. A woman has an important role to make this world a better place by teaching the child the right thing. This is a tribute to all the mothers, who don’t only go through change in their body for motherhood but are always ready to sacrifice and compromise just so that her child can have all the comfort and care in the world.

I would also like to mention here women from different walks of life who are doing whatever they are doing, giving hours of their day, working hard and sweating out. You must know that you are an inspiration. You don’t need recognition, accolades or awards to do your best. You are inspiring someone just by being yourself every day. Women who cry over little things. Women who laugh out loud. Women in love. Women with scars. Women with stories. Brave women. Vulnerable women.

Let’s celebrate womanhood, every day of our life.
